Today is a day of
public transport. We catch the metro to Compos Grande and there
before us is the Sporting Lisbon stadium. Inside is a shopping
centre, cinema complex and a football pitch. It’s then a journey to
Oriente where we reserve seats for our journey to Porto on Tuesday.
The Lisbon trains are not as new as those in Madrid or Barcelona, but
the stations are interesting with tile art walls or columns.

Later in the day we catch a tram to Belem but due to the long wait for transport we don’t get to the Belem Tower until after closing. There are still a lot of people about, having drinks and picnics on this fine Saturday evening. The bridge across the broad Tagus river looks a little like one from another city, as does the large concrete statue in the distance. Closer to home we have dinner at a “pop up” restaurant and I have sardines that are the “size of sharks”.
